Chelsea coach uncertain of consequences if Champions League spot missed

After losing to Man Utd in premier league round 33, coach Liam Rosenior admits he cannot foresee the implications if Chelsea fails to secure a Champions League spot next season.

A narrow defeat at Stamford Bridge leaves Chelsea in sixth place in the Premier League with 48 points. They risk having the gap widened by rivals Liverpool (52 points) and Aston Villa (55) after Sunday evening's matches.

Following the match, coach Liam Rosenior admitted he was unclear about the impacts if Chelsea could not secure a Champions League spot. "The honest answer is I don't know", he said, adding, "We are still fighting and will assess everything when the season ends, regardless of the outcome".

Midfielder Cole Palmer previously stated he had no intention of leaving Chelsea, suggesting that a Champions League spot would help the team attract new signings. However, absence from Europe's premier club competition could affect both recruitment plans and retention of key players.

After 33 rounds, Chelsea faces a significant challenge. They not only need to catch up with the teams above them but also face pressure from behind, including Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton, and Everton. The "Blues'" form is also alarming, having lost 6 of their last 7 Premier League matches and failing to score in four consecutive games – their worst performance since 1912.

Nevertheless, Rosenior still believes Chelsea can break into the Premier League top 5. "It's a mountain to climb, but not insurmountable", he stated, "We need to win the next match to create momentum for the rest of the season".

In this match, Chelsea dominated, controlling 60% possession and taking 20 shots – compared to Man Utd's 4. However, the hosts were wasteful, with Estevao Willian, Liam Delap, Wesley Fofana hitting the woodwork, and Enzo Fernandez missing a close-range shot wide of the post.

The turning point came at the end of the first half when defender Wesley Fofana had to leave the field for injury treatment, leaving Chelsea temporarily a man down. Seizing the opportunity, Matheus Cunha scored the only goal for Man Utd.

"This is a very difficult result to accept", Rosenior added, "They only had one shot on target when we were playing with 10 men and they scored. We attacked relentlessly but couldn't capitalize on our chances". He emphasized, "Nobody wants to hear that we played well but didn't win. Football is about winning, and we need to change that as soon as possible".

On 21/4, Chelsea will visit Brighton – a club currently in ninth place with 47 points.
