Cole Palmer, one of English football's brightest young stars, is known for his unique "ice cold" celebration. The 23-year-old midfielder often rubs his arms together and puffs out his cheeks after scoring a goal to signify that he is "cold".

Last year, Palmer filed a trademark application for both the name "Cold Palmer" and the accompanying celebration, aiming to commercialize it across a range of products including clothing, alcohol, food, toys, toiletries, razors, and weight-loss drinks.
However, his efforts have been met with opposition from Chateau Palmer, a renowned winery in Margaux, Bordeaux, France. The winemaker expressed concerns that Palmer's trademark could cause confusion and potentially damage their brand image.
A key element in Palmer's application to the Government Intellectual Property Office (GIPO) was his request for legal protection to sell alcohol. The application specifically listed: "Alcoholic beverages; alcoholic fruit beverages; ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages; wines; spirits; liqueurs; alcoholic energy drinks; low-alcohol drinks; excluding wines complying with the PDO Champagne standard".
This immediately caught the attention of Chateau Palmer, leading them to formally oppose the footballer's application. Both parties will now have the opportunity to present their arguments before lawyers at the GIPO, which will ultimately decide the outcome of the trademark dispute.

Chateau Palmer, established in 1814 when British army officer Charles Palmer acquired the estate and renamed it from Chateau de Gascq, is a prestigious winemaker. Some of their bottles are priced at up to 1,000 USD. Chateau Palmer is considered a leading wine estate in Margaux, producing some of the most highly regarded wines in Bordeaux.
Palmer first performed the "Cold Palmer" celebration after scoring in Chelsea's 3-2 win against Luton Town in December 2023. He later revealed that the idea was inspired by his former teammate Morgan Rogers, who celebrated similarly after scoring for Middlesbrough against West Brom. Palmer said he had promised Rogers he would do the same if he scored, and it has now become his signature celebration.
A product of the Man City academy, Palmer made his first-team debut in 2020, scoring six goals in 41 appearances across all competitions. In 2023, he moved to Chelsea in search of more playing time. He has since scored 43 goals and provided 29 assists in 98 matches, helping the club win the UEFA Conference League and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
At the international level, Palmer has two goals in 12 appearances for England, including one in the Euro 2024 final.
