At six years old, during a chimpanzee attack in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sibomana-Rodriguez lost one finger and sustained severe injuries to his lip, face, and right ear. His older brother was also injured, and his cousin tragically passed away.
"When I first saw my face, I was shocked," Sibomana-Rodriguez recalled.
Two years later, Sibomana-Rodriguez traveled to the United States, undergoing 16 surgeries sponsored by the Children's Smile Foundation. To this day, the incident leaves him with significant scars around his mouth, and he can only speak softly.

With his parents having passed away, several families adopted Sibomana-Rodriguez upon his arrival in the U.S. His life changed when he moved to Long Beach to live with the family of wrestling coach Miguel Rodriguez.
Under his adoptive father's guidance, Sibomana-Rodriguez excelled. In a short time, he won five Nassau County championships, three state championships, and the U.S. high school championship last March.
"Don't let others decide who you are; create your own story," Sibomana-Rodriguez stated in an interview on WABC on 16/4.
Sibomana-Rodriguez said he will need to undergo more surgeries around his mouth. He has received a scholarship to Chapel Hill University and plans to attend. "I hope my story can inspire others to overcome adversity," he added.
