Tensions flared at the end of the first set during the second-round match on court 7. Wang believed her shot was in, but her German opponent indicated a ball mark outside the baseline.
The dispute escalated when Wang crossed the net to inspect the ball mark, prompting head umpire Aurelie Tourte to issue a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. This tense atmosphere persisted throughout the match.
Wang Xinyu (in white) crossed to Korpatsch's side of the court to check the ball mark.
"It was a powerful shot, and I saw the ball out," Korpatsch explained. "I don't know if the line judge called it, but there were two ball marks there: an old one and a new one. Both were outside the line, so it wasn't relevant."
The world number 95 player noted that the umpire then descended to the court to verify the ball mark. Television's hawk-eye system also confirmed the ball was out by about 8 millimeters.
"I believe she didn't trust the call, which is why she crossed to my side of the court. I didn't shake hands because she expressed dissatisfaction with the ball mark. I couldn't just concede the point," Korpatsch stated.
Korpatsch refused to shake hands with Wang Xinyu after the match.
The German player expressed surprise at Wang's reaction, noting their good relationship. "We are not enemies," Korpatsch added. "I didn't offer my hand because it felt unfair to me. Her crossing to my side of the court was inappropriate, and I am not a cheater."
Unlike the other three grand slams, Roland Garros does not use electronic line calling. Ball marks on clay courts allow umpires to inspect them directly. However, human judgment can still lead to controversial decisions.
Korpatsch further defended her integrity, stating: "I believe she implied I wasn't playing fair, but I don't understand why. We had one of the best umpires on the court, and cameras are present to review everything. Cheating in such a situation would be disgraceful. Frankly, while chasing the ball, I thought it was out, but I wasn't certain which mark was the definitive one. That's precisely why an umpire is necessary."
