Female MC resigns after falsely reporting Messi's father's death

Florencia Pena, an MC for Argentine television channel Luzu TV, has resigned and issued a public apology after broadcasting false information about the death of Lionel Messi's father.

During the program El Show del Verano, Pena stated, "I don't want to deliver sad news, but Messi's father has just passed away." She also claimed that Messi would have to leave the national team during the 2026 World Cup due to this family event.

The false report quickly circulated on social media, causing a stir. Minutes later, Pena issued a correction, clarifying that it was an unverified rumor from social media platform X.

Florencia Pena resigned after announcing the news of Lionel Messi's father's death.

On 18/6, Pena publicly apologized and accepted responsibility for the error. "I apologize to the Messi family for the distressing moment they may have experienced. I am deeply ashamed to have conveyed this information," Pena stated.

Pena explained that she received the information from the production team during the live broadcast and believed it had been verified. Taking responsibility, she decided to leave her position at Luzu TV and offered a sincere apology.

In an official statement, Luzu TV declared that broadcasting unverified sensitive information is unacceptable. The station's management terminated cooperation with those responsible for the incident and confirmed Pena's voluntary departure. The statement emphasized the channel's commitment to responsible and respectful media operations, adhering to strict verification standards.

In an interview with America TV, as she left Luzu TV headquarters for the last time, Pena stated she was unaware of what was happening outside the studio. "I didn't have a phone or computer while on air. The production team informed me that the event was unfolding, and I merely repeated that information. Later, someone told me it hadn't been verified. I still tremble remembering it," she recounted. Pena noted this was her first serious career mistake.

Concerns about Jorge's health gained attention after Argentina's 3-0 victory over Algeria on 16/6. Messi was seen crying after scoring the opening goal, stating the reason was unrelated to football.

Messi's family, however, confirmed Jorge is recovering and making positive progress. The family also expressed dissatisfaction with recent rumors and speculation, emphasizing that only information released through their official channels is authentic.

Messi maintains a close relationship with his father, Jorge, who not only serves as a family member but also acts as his representative and manages his business affairs, overseeing millions of USD in commercial contracts off the field.
