Global BC News in Vancouver reported that FIFA requested a level 4 escort. This would include a motorcade with the right to bypass red lights and street closures, ensuring unimpeded movement during the FIFA annual congress.
This requested security level is only one step below that provided for the Pope, on par with standards for US presidential visits, and surpasses the protection typically given to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Vancouver police rejected the request, citing the substantial costs it would impose on city taxpayers. FIFA has not yet issued a comment.
The Vancouver Mayor's Office stated on 28/4 that "any transportation arrangements implemented will ensure safety, appropriateness, and consistency with how Vancouver typically hosts major international events."
This is not the first instance of FIFA making such a request, which critics have labeled "ridiculous". In 2023, FIFA proposed a specialized police motorcade escort for Infantino during the Women's World Cup in New Zealand, a request that was also rejected.
New Zealand reserves such escorts for heads of state and high-level diplomats. The country's national police force stated at the time: "New Zealand police received a request for an escort, but rejected it after evaluating it against standard operating procedures."
The security costs for the 2026 World Cup in Vancouver, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, have become a contentious political issue in the city. Ministers have declined to confirm a specific budget, prompting ongoing concerns from the opposition.
Some media outlets estimate the total costs could reach 439 million USD, significantly exceeding prior forecasts, for just 7 World Cup matches held in the city.
