Indonesia will be without about 13 well-known players of Dutch descent currently playing in Europe, as the ASEAN Cup falls outside the FIFA international match calendar. This group includes goalkeeper Maarten Paes from Ajax in the Netherlands, defenders Kevin Diks (Borussia Monchengladbach, Germany), Calvin Verdonk (Lille, France), Jay Idzes (Sassuolo, Italy), midfielder Joey Pelupessy (Lommel, Belgium), and forward Ole Romeny (Fortuna Sittard, the Netherlands).

In the squad list announced today, 24/7, the prominent star included is Justin Hubner, a central defender for Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands, along with Mitchell Baker, a striker for the US club Georgetown Hoyas. Eight other players of Dutch descent who can participate are currently playing in Indonesia. These include defenders Shayne Pattynama, Sandy Walsh, Jordi Amat, Tim Geypens; midfielders Thom Haye, Ivar Jenner, Eliano Reijnders; and forwards Ragnar Oratmagoen and Jens Raven.

The sole naturalized player is Marc Klok, who previously faced Vietnam in the semifinals of the AFF Cup, the predecessor to the ASEAN Cup, in 2022. The midfielder, born in 1993, is remembered for a dive after a collision with Doan Van Hau, a video of which later circulated widely on social media.

Indonesia's current contingent of players of Dutch descent includes many members from the squads that defeated Vietnam 1-0 in the group stage of the Asian Cup 2023, and then 1-0 and 3-0 in the second round of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers – Asia region in 2024. Forward Oratmagoen doubled the lead in the 3-0 victory at My Dinh Stadium. These results led to coach Philippe Troussier's dismissal from the Vietnam national team, making way for Kim Sang-sik.

The list of 26 Indonesian players for the ASEAN Cup 2026 was finalized by coach John Herdman from a pool of 50 players. Alongside the group of Dutch-descendant players, the squad also features two local talents who helped Indonesia secure fourth place at the U23 Asia 2024: central defender Rizky Ridho and midfielder Marselino Ferdinan, who plays for Oxford United in the English second tier.

Indonesia trained for two weeks in Bali, defeating Bali United 3-0 in a practice match. Coach Herdman praised the team's cohesion and progress. However, the English coach emphasized that winning the ASEAN Cup is not the primary objective; rather, he views the tournament as an opportunity for Indonesia to develop and aim for larger goals.

"Indonesia's goal is to participate in the World Cup, and then compete at the Asian level", Herdman told Bola, a leading Indonesian sports newspaper. "The ASEAN Cup offers a chance for the entire team to develop. Vietnam is a challenging opponent and a test for us".

Indonesia will rest during the first round of Group A matches tonight. They will play their opening match against Cambodia at home on 27/7, followed by games against Timor Leste (away, 31/7), Vietnam (home, 3/8), and Singapore (away, 7/8).

Indonesia has never won a Southeast Asian championship, having lost all six finals in previous editions of the Tiger Cup and AFF Cup.
