Indonesia delivered a dominant performance against Oman, a team ranked 39 positions higher at 79th in the FIFA standings. While historical records show Indonesia previously defeated Oman in 1987 and 1988, the 21st century saw Oman win three and draw one of their encounters, including a 3-1 victory in their last friendly in 5/2021.
Five years later, Indonesia showcased a transformed squad, integrating many players of mixed heritage, with 14 of the 23 called-up players having dual citizenship. Eleven of these players currently compete for clubs in Europe, across England, France, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and Italy. In contrast, Oman’s squad included only two players based in the Czech Republic.

Indonesia opened the scoring in the 13th minute from a free-kick on the left flank. Nathan Tjoe-A-On delivered a left-footed cross into the 5.5-meter box, where Justin Hubner connected with a close-range header, marking his first goal for the national team.
Despite Oman regaining control and increasing pressure, a defensive error proved costly in the 27th minute. A misdirected defensive header allowed Ole Romeny to drive into the penalty area and finish with a diagonal shot. The shot, while not powerful and seemingly within reach, was fumbled by goalkeeper Ahmed Alrwahi due to a slow reaction, leading to the second goal.
Even after conceding two goals, Oman did not lose momentum. A significant opportunity arose in the 38th minute when Justin Hubner fouled Amjad Alharti inside the box, resulting in a penalty. However, Hatem Alrushadi’s shot to the left corner was anticipated and saved by goalkeeper Emil Audero. This crucial save was met with thunderous applause and cheers from the approximately 40,000 home fans, rivaling the excitement of the goals. The goalkeeper, who plays for Cremonese in Italy, denied Oman two more scoring chances before halftime.

The second half began with intensity in the 46th minute after a clash between Amjad Alharthi and Kevin Diks. The verbal exchange escalated with Nathan Tjoe-A-On’s involvement, leading to a physical altercation that required the referee’s intervention. A yellow card was issued to the player who assisted the opening goal.
The home side secured their third goal in the 55th minute following a well-executed play on the right wing. Dony Tri Pamungkas threaded a pass to Ivar Jenner, who delivered a cross to the edge of the penalty area. Ragnar Oratmagoen’s first-time shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, but he quickly followed up with a rebound to seal the 3-0 victory.
This victory is expected to earn Indonesia an additional 6.56 points, potentially moving them up four ranks in the FIFA standings. The team is scheduled for another friendly match on 9/6 against Mozambique, also at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium. The African team is currently ranked 101st by FIFA.
These two friendly matches serve as important preparation for coach Herdman ahead of the ASEAN Cup 2026, scheduled for late 7. However, Indonesia’s squad is expected to undergo significant changes, as many European-based players may not be released by their clubs to join the national team.
