The VnExpress Marathon All-Star is the only race in Vietnam that applies strict entry criteria, exclusively for the 21 km and 42 km distances. To qualify, male athletes must complete 42 km in under 4 hours or 21 km in under 2 hours. Female athletes must finish a full marathon in under 5 hours or a half marathon in under 2 hours 30 minutes.

The event draws 1,500 high-achieving amateur runners, athletes from top athletics teams, and elite participants from abroad. The race takes place on a specialized course in Hoa Lac, often referred to by the community as Vietnam's "temple of speed" for its many long, straight sections and minimal turns. The 42 km race begins at 5:00 AM, while the 21 km race starts at 5:30 AM.
