This match mirrored Liverpool's season: a fragile defense and wasted attacking opportunities led to their second defeat in Turkey this season, putting them at a disadvantage for the return leg.
The game began at a rapid pace. Liverpool threatened the host's goal in the opening minutes, but failing to convert their chances, they immediately exposed defensive errors during Galatasaray's first corner kick. In his 100th match managing the team, Slot witnessed Liverpool's man-marking system collapse. Victor Osimhen jumped high to pass across the goal, and Mario Lemina rushed in to head the ball home from close range. This was Galatasaray's first shot of the match.

Lemina's goal was the only one in a surprisingly fast-paced game. In the first half alone, Noa Lang, Osimhen, and Davinson Sanchez could have extended the home side's lead. Liverpool, vulnerable to aerial balls when gaps appeared between defenders, had to thank goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili's quick reflexes amid the stadium's noisy atmosphere.
Florian Wirtz was wasteful, notably with a one-touch shot that went wide of an open goal. The match was chaotic and intense. At one end, Hugo Ekitike, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai were denied by Ugurcan Cakir. At the other, Osimhen had his eighth Champions League goal of the season disallowed when Baris Alper Yilmaz was deemed to be involved in an offside position, despite not touching the ball.
In the second half, Alexis Mac Allister nearly equalized within the first two minutes. Liverpool's short passing game gave them superior possession, but they remained vulnerable to quick counter-attacks.
Mohamed Salah, playing his 81st Champions League match for Liverpool—a club record—was substituted in the 60th minute after struggling to influence the game. However, he was not the only attacker underperforming, as Wirtz also had a subdued match.

Minutes later, Osimhen put the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside, while Ibrahima Konate nearly paid a heavy price for a careless back-pass. Late in the game, Hugo Ekitike missed a one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. Liverpool also had a goal disallowed when Konate was judged to have handled the ball in a scramble.
The one-nil victory strengthened Galatasaray's impressive home record, as they have lost only two of their last 47 matches across all competitions at home. Liverpool's run of three consecutive away wins was broken. The good news for Slot's team is that the situation can still be salvaged in the return leg at Anfield.
The return leg at Anfield will be different. Many stadiums have whistling, but few have the simultaneous, fierce, and deafening sound of Galatasaray's fans. Slot had mentioned being overwhelmed by the noise when Liverpool lost at Rams Park in October and hoped the players would be more accustomed to it on their return. However, that level of sound is likely impossible to get used to, causing significant communication problems for Liverpool's players throughout the first leg.
