Enzo Maresca, Manchester City's coach, firmly stated his belief that the club's titles are not tainted by recent allegations of financial rule breaches. Speaking at a press conference on 9/10, held before Manchester City's Premier League match against Liverpool in round 6, Maresca made his first public appearance since the club was found to have committed serious financial rule violations over nine seasons, from 2009 to 2018. The Italian coach arrived early, smiled as he took his seat, and maintained a firm demeanor for nearly 16 minutes while answering questions.
Maresca expressed unwavering commitment to Manchester City, stating he would "100% yes" have accepted the role of succeeding Pep Guardiola even with prior knowledge of the verdict. He emphasized his complete faith in the club and its people, citing this as his reason for joining. "There is no other club in the world where I would rather work. I am very happy and proud to be here," he affirmed, acknowledging that the legal process is ongoing.

Manchester City has appealed the findings of multiple financial rule violations between 2009 and 2018. This verdict sparked debate regarding the legitimacy of the team's successes since ADUG, an investment group from UAE, acquired the club in 2008. These successes include their historic treble in the 2022-2023 season.
Maresca served as an assistant to Guardiola during that treble-winning season, when Manchester City secured their first Champions League title, alongside the Premier League and FA Cup. The 46-year-old coach rejects the notion that his medals are tarnished by the recent ruling. "Absolutely not," Maresca emphasized, highlighting the significant efforts put in by players, coaches, and the club. "I know how hard the team had to work to achieve those goals. Therefore, I have no doubts whatsoever."
In 5/2022, Guardiola stated he would immediately leave Manchester City if he discovered the board was dishonest about financial activities. When asked if he shared a similar view with his predecessor, Maresca declined to make a comparable commitment. "I want to discuss this issue when we win the appeal," he stated. "Right now, discussing it is pointless because I don't have much information. I trust the club and the people here. That's why I came to Manchester City."
Reporters further questioned whether his trust would waver if Manchester City's appeal failed. Maresca suggested avoiding speculation about the future. "We are trying to predict what has not yet happened," he said. "I am concerned with tomorrow, the next two days, or the next three days. I don't know what the future holds. In my opinion, the fairest thing right now is to respect the legal process. A verdict has been reached, but the appeal process is ongoing. Let's wait and see what happens."

One potential penalty Manchester City faces is expulsion from the Premier League. Guardiola previously stated his readiness to continue managing the team even if they were relegated to League One, England's third tier, or the National League, equivalent to the fifth tier. When asked if he would be prepared to do the same, Maresca did not give a direct answer. "I won the Championship with Leicester in the 2023-2024 season. So, if we had to play in League One, we would consider it. But currently, we are discussing something that may or may not happen," he replied.
Manchester City will play away at Liverpool on 11/10, in their first match since the verdict was announced. Maresca affirmed the entire squad understands the seriousness of the situation but needs to set aside external distractions to focus on the game. The Italian coach believes their top position in the Premier League, with a perfect winning record this season, motivates the players to maintain a positive mindset.
In addition to questions concerning the financial penalties, Maresca also provided an update on the squad's condition before the Liverpool match. He confirmed that forward Erling Haaland has recovered after voluntarily requesting a substitution while playing for the Norway national team during the international break.
