Coach Cristian "Kily" Gonzalez confirmed that Messi will travel to Oviedo, Spain next week to receive the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
The ceremony is scheduled for 23/10 at the Campoamor Theater, presided over by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, with Princess Leonor directly presenting the honors. Inter Miami will play an away match against New York Red Bulls in MLS one day later.

Despite Messi's transatlantic travel close to game day, Gonzalez expressed no concern about his player's fitness. "Messi has this important event, and I am happy for him to attend. The entire club agreed, as this is a very important award, not only for Messi but also for his family", he stated during a press conference on 16/10.
The 52-year-old coach affirmed that Messi remains in his plans for the match against New York Red Bulls. "I want Leo to feel comfortable. He needs that. Messi will be in Spain, then return to play with us. So, I am not worried at all", the Argentine coach added.
According to the schedule released by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, Messi will arrive in Oviedo on 22/10 to meet students and fans at the Oviedo Sports Palace. This activity is part of the "Toma la palabra" (Speak Up) cultural program, highlighted by "El juego del 10" (The Game of 10) project, inspired by Messi's iconic jersey number.
In the project, students are encouraged to create a new way to play football at school, establish 10 rules, and apply them for 10 days. They then assess the effectiveness and adjust the rules if necessary. The activity aims to promote inclusion, respect, and empathy through football.
On 23/10, Messi will attend the official award ceremony. Due to Inter Miami's match schedule, his time in Spain will be limited. Whether the Argentine superstar will attend the dinner after the ceremony is unconfirmed. Messi is also not among the four individuals scheduled to speak at the event.
The Princess of Asturias Award is presented annually to honor individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions in eight fields: Arts, Literature, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Scientific and Technical Research, International Cooperation, Harmony, and Sports.

Messi was announced as the recipient of the 2026 Sports Award on 3/6, making him the first footballer to be honored individually in this category. Previously, football was represented by the Brazil national team in 2002, the Spain national team in 2010, and the duo Iker Casillas - Xavi Hernandez in 2012. Last year, the honor went to American tennis legend Serena Williams.
In its award decision, the jury, chaired by Teresa Perales, praised Messi's talent, distinguished playing career, and long-standing philanthropic activities, particularly his efforts to help disadvantaged children access education and healthcare. The jury also highlighted the Argentine forward's humility, team spirit, and exemplary conduct on the field.
For Messi, the award holds special significance because Spain is where he grew up and spent most of his career. "Spain and Catalunya are part of my life", the 39-year-old forward shared when notified of the award in June. "I grew up there as a player, lived there for many years, and my children were also born there. I have always felt great affection from everyone, so this award is very special".
The 2022 World Cup champion also emphasized that career achievements do not come from individual effort alone. "Behind every success are teammates, family, and many people who helped me", he expressed. "I hope my story can inspire children to continue pursuing their dreams, through hard work, love of sport, and respect for the values that sport brings".
At 39, Messi remains a key player for Inter Miami. He leads the MLS Golden Boot race with 23 goals, four more than Petar Musa of FC Dallas, his closest rival. The Argentine superstar's scoring form helped Inter Miami secure an early spot in the MLS 2026 play-offs.
Before Messi departs for Spain, Inter Miami will visit Atlanta United at 6:30 h on 18/10, Hanoi time.
