Premier League record-holder retires at 40

James Milner has decided to hang up his boots at 40, holding the record for the most appearances in Premier League history across 24 seasons.

Since his debut in 2002, Milner has played 658 Premier League matches for Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton, respectively. The previous record for appearances in the league belonged to Gareth Barry with 653 matches from 1998-2018, a milestone Milner surpassed in February 2026.

Milner began his professional career at Leeds, the club where he rose through the academy ranks, making his Premier League debut at 16 years and 356 days old. From there, the versatile player went on to represent five other top-flight English clubs: Newcastle, Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton.

Having spent the last three years with Brighton after joining as a free agent, Milner's contract expires this June. He received an offer for a one-year extension, but after discussions, the 40-year-old veteran decided it was the right time to retire.

"From making my debut at 16 for Leeds and becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at the time, I never dared to dream about the journey I've had," Milner wrote on Instagram on 1/6. "Even last year, when I thought I couldn't lift my legs anymore, I was able to return and help Brighton secure a European qualification spot for the second time in the club's history at 40 years old."

Milner reflected on his experiences playing for Newcastle, Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, Brighton, and even a month at Swindon in 2003 as privileges. He expressed gratitude for the unforgettable moments he experienced, from fierce relegation battles to lifting championship trophies, playing in European competitions, and representing England.

"I leave the pitch with pride, immense gratitude, and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be grateful for the opportunities this sport has provided," Milner concluded his announcement.

During his two-decade career, Milner amassed an impressive collection of achievements. With Manchester City from 2010-2015, he won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and one League Cup. At Liverpool from 2015-2023, Milner added another Premier League title, an FA Cup, a League Cup, and famously, the 2019 Champions League. Additionally, he earned 61 caps for England, participating in two European Championships and two World Cups.

Manuel Pellegrini, one of Milner's coaches at Etihad, once praised him as "the most complete player in English football." Milner's professionalism and meticulousness were further evidenced by his self-taught Spanish, allowing him to communicate better with teammates. Later, he applied a rule of only speaking Spanish at home to help his two young children become fluent in the language. "That's how stubborn I am," he once quipped.

In February 2026, former Manchester City teammate Nedum Onuoha described Milner as "ahead of his time" in his professional mindset. Meanwhile, former Leeds striker Michael Bridges recalled Milner's seamless transition from a schoolboy to a first-team player at Elland Road. Bridges also revealed Milner only drank Ribena Toothkind juice during team celebrations filled with beer and alcohol.

At 16, while living in Leeds' Youth Training Scheme (YTS) academy, a clause in his 94 USD-per-week contract required him to clean the changing rooms after first-team matches he had just played in. True to Milner's style, a player whose daily task at the time was also shining the boots of the U18 captain, he never complained or showed discomfort.

While humility and discipline were the launchpad for his enduring career, a fierce fighting spirit was equally important. Former goalkeeper Steve Harper – who was once Newcastle's undisputed "darts king" – remembered how new signing Milner immediately usurped his title, leading to the nickname "Machine Gun Milner."

Affectionately known as "Milly", Milner could play as a full-back, winger, and even a wide forward when needed, in addition to his natural central midfield position. Milner made friends and fans at every club he played for. "He was the glue that held everything together, a perfect role model," Onuoha once described.
