Vietnamese football star Nguyen Quang Hai, despite a decorated career, asserts he has yet to reach his peak. The 29-year-old midfielder expressed his relentless drive to achieve more for the nation. "I still haven't reached my peak. For me, waking up every day to train and conquer higher positions is what drives me to never stop", Quang Hai said. "I want to win more titles for Vietnam and go further in bigger tournaments in Asia and the world".

This ambition comes as Quang Hai prepares to lead Vietnam into the ASEAN Cup 2026 semi-finals against Malaysia. As the national team captain and most-capped player with 84 appearances over 10 years, he carries significant expectations. The first leg of the semi-final is set for 16/8 in Kuala Lumpur, with the return match three days later at My Dinh Stadium.

Quang Hai has been central to Vietnam's footballing success, securing nearly every major domestic and regional title. His accolades include a 4th-place finish at the U19 Asia tournament in 2016, which qualified them for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2017. He was also a runner-up at the U23 Asia tournament in 2018, and has won two ASEAN Cup championships in 2018 and 2024, alongside a SEA Games gold medal in 2021. The ASEAN Cup official website has even hailed him as a "giant" of Vietnamese football.

Beyond regional dominance, Quang Hai eyes further progress on the Asian stage. He aims for his third consecutive Asian Cup appearance, having previously reached the quarter-finals in 2019. In World Cup qualifiers, he helped Vietnam reach the third round for the 2022 campaign, a national best. At 33 years old in 2030, he still harbors the dream of playing in a World Cup.

While Quang Hai has scored 8 goals in ASEAN Cup tournaments, including one this year in Vietnam's 7-0 victory over Timor Leste, his recent performances have drawn scrutiny. Despite being the V-League 2025-2026 best player, he faces pressure and criticism that his play hasn't always matched the demands of his captaincy.

However, coach Kim Sang-sik remains steadfast in his belief in Quang Hai's importance to the national team. After an unsuccessful experiment pairing him as a central midfielder with Nguyen Hoang Duc, the Korean tactician reinstated Quang Hai to his preferred attacking midfield role in the 3-1 victory against Cambodia, a move that proved effective.

Looking ahead to the semi-final, Quang Hai has an impressive record against Malaysia at the national team level, with eight wins and one draw. Despite this, he urges caution. "No opponent is easy, and playing away is always tough", Hai stated. "The entire team must maintain high concentration to secure a favorable result before returning home".
