Ronaldo's mother: 'Portugal does not appreciate my son'

Dolores Aveiro believes Cristiano Ronaldo has contributed significantly to Portugal but is not properly appreciated, following his departure from the national team due to a conflict with coach Jorge Jesus.

"I am clearly sad. This is a shock", Dolores said in an interview with TV 7 Dias on 7/10. "My son could have left through the front door, but instead he left through the back door. But it's okay, God will take care of everything."

Ronaldo's mother used the phrases "front door" and "back door" metaphorically to describe the 41-year-old forward's departure from the team. While she did not elaborate on the specific details of the argument between Ronaldo and coach Jorge Jesus, she expressed profound disappointment at how the events unfolded.

Dolores admitted to crying after learning of the situation. "I cried a little. It was good to release emotion. We must turn the situation around", she stated.

According to Dolores, Ronaldo called her after leaving the training camp. During their conversation, the Al Nassr forward reassured his mother, stating he would tell the full truth when they were all together.

She recounted: "My son told me: 'Mother, do not worry, I will tell the truth when all of us are together.' I replied: 'Alright son, get through this.' I also told him to stay calm, but his mind was made up. We will wait and see."

Dolores affirmed her support for Ronaldo, stating she could not change his decision. She did not specify the subject of the disagreement between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus, but she emphasized that the forward retains the full support of his family. "It is fine, he has given so much to Portugal, so he is always there. He is always a hero for Portugal. They do not appreciate him as they should", she added.

Ronaldo left the national team due to disagreements with the 72-year-old coach. The 41-year-old forward did not remain at the training camp, leading to his absence from Portugal's 4-2 victory over Denmark. Dolores mentioned she still watched the team, despite her son not playing. "I watched the matches. I always watch for Portugal. I regret my son is no longer there", she said.

Dolores's statements come after the conflict between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus attracted significant attention across Portugal. Ronaldo is the captain and most influential player in the team's history. However, the manner of his recent departure from the training camp makes the situation particularly sensitive.

Dolores, 71 years old, has four children with her late husband Jose Dinis Aveiro. Cristiano Ronaldo is the youngest child in the family. His older siblings are Elma, 53 years old, Hugo, 51 years old, and Katia, 49 years old.

Ronaldo has repeatedly affirmed the importance of the national team to his career. He led Portugal to victory in Euro 2016 and won the Nations League two times. At the World Cup 2026 under the guidance of coach Roberto Martinez, he played 98% of the team's minutes.

However, Ronaldo's future under Jorge Jesus is now uncertain following the latest incident. His departure from the training camp also raises questions about his captaincy with the national team. Dolores stated she awaits further conversation with Ronaldo before commenting more.
