The truth about running and kidney health

Running can reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease by 18%, as long as runners don't overexert themselves.

Recent cases of acute kidney injury during summer races have raised health concerns. Some experienced runners and doctors have posted warnings and preventative advice. However, when done correctly and in moderation, running improves kidney function rather than causing damage.

A 2021 report in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases showed that moderate exercise, like brisk walking or light running for 30 to 60 minutes daily, can reduce the risk of developing chronic kidney disease by 18%.

Doctor Nguyen Duc Loc of Victoria Healthcare recommends moderate-intensity running to avoid stressing the kidneys, especially for those new to exercise. "Warning signs of kidney stress from running include prolonged fatigue, dark urine, and infrequent urination," he said.

Doctor Loc explained that proper running increases blood flow to organs, including the kidneys. This improves blood filtration, maintains electrolyte balance, and removes toxins more efficiently.

Along with proper training, a healthy diet rich in fiber and low in salt and saturated fat reduces the metabolic strain on the kidneys, especially for regular runners.

Proper hydration is also crucial. Dehydration thickens the blood, increasing the burden on the kidneys. "Runners should hydrate before, during, and after running, especially in the sun or for runs over 60 minutes," Doctor Loc said.

This is why large races like the VnExpress Marathon Da Nang 2025 prioritize hydration and medical support. The race will have 22 water stations and 18 medical stations along the course to help runners stay hydrated, avoid dehydration, and receive prompt medical attention if needed.

Individuals with pre-existing conditions like kidney disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes should consult a doctor before starting a running program. Personalized training plans ensure safety and optimal results.

The VnExpress Marathon Da Nang 2025 takes place on the morning of 20/7, with a route passing iconic landmarks like the Dragon Bridge, Thuan Phuoc Bridge, Han River, and Vo Nguyen Giap coastal road. This year, the starting time is changed to 2:30 a.m. The finish line for the 42 km race is moved to Bien Dong Park to accommodate larger crowds and enhance the runner experience. See more news here.
