Frances Tiafoe, the world number 22, experienced an unusual incident at Roland Garros 2026 after his second-round victory. Following an intense five-set match against Hubert Hurkacz, Tiafoe lost his racket during an emotional celebration with fans. He later offered two tickets to his next match for its safe return.
Tiafoe defeated Hurkacz with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 after 4 hours and 43 minutes on court 14 on 28/5. This was one of the longest and most intense matches on the fifth day of Roland Garros 2026, as both players constantly traded high-quality shots.
After hitting a forehand winner that sealed the match, Tiafoe erupted with emotion, rushing towards the stands to hug fans, his racket still in hand. However, while celebrating with the crowd, he misplaced the racket that secured his victory.
Upon returning to the court and preparing to leave, Tiafoe realized something was amiss. The American player turned to his team and said, "Wait, I think I'm missing a racket". Coach Mark Kovacs immediately suggested posting on social media to find it.

"I was like, 'That would be fun'", Tiafoe recalled cheerfully. "I thought it could be recovered here. In the US, it would probably be gone for good".
Tiafoe quickly posted on Instagram, offering two tickets to his next match if a fan returned the distinctive green racket. The American player stated he brought eight rackets to Paris, but still wanted to retrieve the exact one he won the match point with, for good luck.
Not long after, a member of his team posted a selfie with the person holding the racket, accompanied by a playful message: "Next time, hold onto your racket tighter". The fan was also holding the shoes Tiafoe wore during the match. It is currently unclear whether the two tickets Tiafoe promised were given.
Despite the unusual incident, Tiafoe showed no annoyance. On the contrary, he considered it an enjoyable part of the experience. "It's awesome. It's all just fun", the world number 22 said after the second-round match. "I'm so happy the fans got to have that moment with me. That's going to be a memory they'll never forget, and I definitely won't forget it either. Everything was just fun".
Tiafoe reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals last year and made it to the US Open semifinals two times. His victory over Hurkacz advanced the American player to the third round of Roland Garros, where he will face Portuguese opponent Jaime Faria, who eliminated Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets.
