Tommy Fury accused of exaggerating triathlon finish

Tommy Fury, brother of former heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, was found to have not completed the full 100km triathlon in France, despite celebrating at the finish line with his girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague.

On 31/8, Tommy participated in his first triathlon on the French Riviera, consisting of a 2km swim, an 80km cycle, and an 18km run. The 25-year-old boxer garnered attention after sharing a video of himself crossing the finish line on Instagram, attracting over 250,000 likes and claiming to have "given it his all on the track" after only 10 days of training.

Tommy Fury posted a video of himself running towards the finish line of the 100km triathlon.

Tommy also shared moments of celebration with his girlfriend Molly-Mae and their daughter Bambi at the finish line. Molly-Mae reposted these family moments on her Instagram, including a photo of her hugging and kissing Tommy.

However, Marathon Investigation revealed race data showing Tommy did not complete the full course. Specifically, the results recorded him only cycling 48km, while the required distance was 80km. On the Sportstats website, the symbol DNF (Did Not Finish) appears next to Tommy's name, along with 92 other athletes who did not complete the race.

Molly-Mae posted a photo expressing pride in Tommy Fury completing the triathlon despite only training for 10 days.

The specialized website tri247.com explained that the race route for the amateur group was shortened and had a time limit due to road closures. Many athletes, including Tommy, could not complete the cycling section before the roads reopened to traffic. The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), which organized the event, then allowed them to continue with the 18km run to have a complete experience.

"Due to permit limitations on the race route in France, some athletes, including Tommy Fury, were unable to complete the cycling leg before the time limit", the PTO's statement clarified. "However, with our philosophy of encouraging newcomers, we still allowed them to continue with the run and cross the finish line".

As a result, many fans criticized Tommy for exaggerating his achievement. "Be honest, you didn't complete the required swim and bike sections," one account commented. "The organizers confirmed you didn't meet the standard, but social media turned it into a triumph," another person expressed their disapproval.

Tommy Fury, born in 1999 in Manchester, is the younger brother of former heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury. He competes in the lightweight and welterweight divisions and made his professional debut in 2018 with a victory over Jevgenijs Andrejevs.

Tommy has won all 11 of his professional fights, most notably against YouTubers Jake Paul and KSI in 2023, which helped his name reach beyond traditional boxing circles.

Outside the ring, Tommy is known for participating in the reality TV show Love Island in 2019. Thanks to this, the 26-year-old boxer has become a familiar face in British entertainment.
