Welbeck scores first goal for Chelsea

Striker Danny Welbeck’s header opens the scoring, helping Chelsea win 2-0 against Luton Town in the League Cup second round.

Head coach Xabi Alonso fielded a strong lineup, despite Chelsea having only three days of rest after their 3-2 victory over Fulham in the Premier League first round. "The Blues" started with an attacking front four: Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Estevao Willian, and new signing Danny Welbeck.

At their home ground, Stamford Bridge, Chelsea completely dominated. The hosts controlled 66% of possession, making 26 attempts at goal, with seven on target – significantly outperforming Luton Town, a club currently playing in England’s third division, who managed seven attempts and one on target.

Chelsea wasted numerous opportunities, waiting until the start of the second half to break the deadlock. Malo Gusto advanced down the right wing and delivered a cross into the box. Welbeck eluded a Luton defender before leaping to head the ball into the visitors’ net.

This was Welbeck’s first goal for Chelsea, allowing the English striker to quickly make his mark at the new club. The second goal came in the final minutes, when Estevao struck a diagonal shot. The ball deflected off Hakeem Odoffin, changed direction, and went into the net, being recorded as an own goal.

"Danny is a very patient person," Alonso said regarding Welbeck’s opening goal. "He does the best he can: scoring goals and being in the right place."

This summer, Chelsea recruited Welbeck from Brighton, offering him a two-year contract. The English striker will create competition with Joao Pedro in Chelsea’s attack this season. Crucially, Welbeck brings essential experience to a relatively young squad.

Another significant aspect of Chelsea’s victory was Enzo Fernandez’s exclusion from the squad. The London club aims to quell the speculation surrounding the Argentine midfielder, who is a target for Man City.

Alonso explained that he prioritizes the team’s interests, while also noting that Fernandez has maintained professionalism and trained well. However, Alonso’s responses were insufficient to dispel the feeling that the Argentine midfielder might have played his final match for Chelsea.

This decision is likely beneficial for both parties. Fernandez has sought to leave Chelsea since March, while the club requires players fully committed to the team. Alonso aims to improve the squad’s culture and attitude, and the performance against Luton offered some positive signs.

In the League Cup third round, Chelsea will face Leeds. Other notable matches include: Ipswich Town - Arsenal, Liverpool - Tottenham, Man City - Norwich, and Man Utd - Brighton.
