Mexico City will kick off the World Cup 2026 with an opening ceremony combining music, culture, and football at the legendary Azteca stadium. The event is scheduled to begin approximately 90 minutes before the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, which takes place on the evening of 11/6 (Mexico time).
This edition marks the first time in history that the World Cup is co-hosted by three nations: Mexico, Canada, and the United States. In light of this, FIFA has planned a series of three consecutive opening ceremonies across the host countries. Mexico serves as the starting point for the tournament's journey, which will span over one month.

The Mexico City event will feature a lineup of artists from various regions worldwide. Colombian singer J Balvin will perform alongside compatriot Ryan Castro, with other names including Shakira, Burna Boy, Belinda, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs, Los Angeles Azules, and the band Mana. South African star Tyla will also participate in the evening, later singing the South African national anthem before kickoff.
Representing the host nation, singer Alejandro Fernandez will perform the Mexican national anthem. Renowned actress Salma Hayek will appear on the field as a World Cup 2026 ambassador, extending greetings to fans and celebrating the spirit of unity that football fosters.
According to FIFA, the opening ceremony will celebrate Mexican identity through music, folk art, and performances inspired by papel picado—a traditional paper craft decoration of the country. Thousands of spectators in the stadium are also expected to actively participate in the segments.
The World Cup 2026 is the first edition to feature 48 national teams, with a total of 104 matches across 16 cities in the three host nations. Following the Mexico City opening, similar events will be held in Toronto (Canada) and Los Angeles (United States), before the tournament concludes with the final in the New York - New Jersey area on 19/7.
