Avoid keeping passports in carry-on luggage

Many travel experts advise passengers to always keep passports in a personal bag worn on their person instead of in carry-on luggage.

Keeping passports in carry-on luggage can lead to problems, especially with stricter airline policies. Airlines often tighten carry-on size and weight limits. If luggage exceeds these standards at the boarding gate, passengers must check it. Having a passport inside checked luggage poses a risk during travel procedures.

For international flights, having immediate access to your passport is crucial for immigration. Passengers must clear passport control for entry before reaching the baggage claim area. Without a passport, travelers risk being denied entry or incurring fines.

A missing passport can also cause significant issues for connecting flights. Lacking this essential document can lead to missed connections and additional costs for new tickets, particularly for subsequent domestic legs.

Beyond airline regulations, carry-on bags are not secure locations for passports. While precise statistics are hard to find, theft on airplanes is common. If you have to store your carry-on in an overhead bin or under a seat far from you, constant monitoring becomes difficult. Forgetting items is also a risk, and retrieving forgotten belongings after disembarking can be a lengthy process.

Real-world examples highlight the severe consequences of misplacing passports. In 2018, two British passengers traveling to Greece forgot their passports on a plane. They told The Independent, "We forgot our passports and were guarded like criminals, then deported less than one hour later, with no other option." Their passports were never found.

The risks extend to checked luggage as well. Similar problems can arise if your passport is in a checked bag that gets lost or stolen during transit. Replacing a passport is not only costly but also time-consuming, given the numerous identification documents needed to re-collect.

Experienced travelers consistently keep their passports on their person throughout their journey. They achieve this by utilizing fanny packs, cross-body bags, or travel clothing designed with deep, secure pockets.

When using clothing pockets, prioritize security and accessibility. Ensure the pocket has a zipper and is positioned safely. The passport should also be easy to retrieve, as all passengers need it for security checks, boarding, and immigration.

The safest place for a passport is within a personal item that remains with you at all times. This includes small backpacks or handbags kept under the seat, ensuring your passport is always within reach throughout your trip.
