The Prix Versailles announced the list on 15/6 at UNESCO headquarters. This annual award, established in 2015, celebrates outstanding contemporary architectural projects worldwide.
Before its recent recognition, Techo garnered attention for its investment exceeding two billion USD. The airport spans 2,600 ha, situated approximately 20 km south of the capital Phnom Penh. Prix Versailles described it as "a symbol of innovation, permanence, and stability". The name "Techo" is a title bestowed by kings upon heroes 500 years ago, embodying the indomitable spirit of the Khmer people.
Designed by British architectural firm Foster + Partners, Techo airport is slated to open in 9/2025. Its infrastructure features a comprehensive dome roof. The internal layout shortens walking distances from the drop-off area to departure gates and aids traveler navigation.
The wavy, modular roof rises in the building's center, echoing the architecture of ancient Cambodian palaces and temples. Inside, the ceiling, inspired by traditional basket weaving, creates the impression of a giant rattan artwork. This design minimizes the need for mechanical ventilation and artificial lighting. Champa flowers, Cambodia's national flower, are also integrated throughout the terminal.
Han Khim, a Cambodian travel blogger who experienced Techo airport, was impressed by the designers' integration of national culture into every detail.
"I am truly proud to step in here", he said.
Passenger flow is optimized with a straight, one-way path, clear signage, and minimal backtracking. The airport's initial capacity is 13 million passengers annually, with plans to expand to 50 million passengers by 2050.
