Among travelers to Ha Giang, a common saying is "four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul," reflecting the choice between a car and a motorcycle.
Giap Van Hai, a long-time tour guide in Ha Giang, caters to diverse groups, offering both options. "Most young people choose motorcycles, while those 40 and older generally prefer cars," he says.
Cong Dan, another Ha Giang guide, advises motorcycles for small groups seeking adventure. For larger groups who prefer a more relaxed pace and scenic views from afar, a car is more suitable.

Guides emphasize that the choice depends on individual needs, preferences, health, and budget. Visitors should research the terrain and consult with tourism professionals and experienced travelers.
Cars offer comfort, protection from the elements, and smoother travel on rough roads. This makes them ideal for older adults, families with children, and those seeking to conserve energy, especially on long, steep routes like Ma Pi Leng. Cars are also preferable for travelers with lots of luggage, camping gear, or filming equipment.
However, as Giap Van Hai points out, "Ha Giang's beauty lies in its roads," and motorcycles provide a more immersive experience. They offer the flexibility to stop and admire the scenery, capture photos at will, and fully experience the climate, wind, "the scent of the mountains and forests, and a sense of freedom." Motorcycles also allow easier access to remote villages, small roads, and off-road trails.
Motorcycles are generally cheaper, renting for around 200,000 VND per day for 1-2 people. However, for groups of 4-6, a car becomes more cost-effective.

Each option has its limitations. Cars might bypass scenic spots accessible only by motorcycle or on foot, and they can't fully capture the atmosphere, especially on pleasant days. Motorcycles, on the other hand, can be physically demanding, particularly on long journeys.
"Many people experience back pain from long motorcycle rides in Ha Giang," Hai adds. Motorcycles are best suited for young, fit individuals who can handle varying weather conditions and don't mind carrying gear.
Regardless of the chosen mode of transport, thorough preparation is crucial. Ha Giang's roads are primarily mountainous, with hairpin bends and frequent fog. Those unfamiliar with these conditions or with limited experience driving on challenging roads may find it difficult. "Those who must travel by car should consider hiring a local driver for safety," Hai advises.
Mai Phuong, who explored Ha Giang by motorcycle two years ago, attests to the unparalleled experience of witnessing the region's majestic beauty on two wheels. However, she notes the considerable distances – around 150 km from Ha Giang to Dong Van, with other destinations averaging 20 km apart – and the steep, winding terrain. "If traveling by motorcycle, be a confident rider, comfortable with manual transmissions, maintain a moderate speed, and prepare thoroughly," Phuong advises.
