Flight bookings to cities hosting the final matches of the World Cup 2026 increased by 75% ahead of the semifinals. Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines simultaneously added thousands of seats to meet demand.
The rising trend is most evident from Argentina. According to CNBC, flight bookings from Argentina to Atlanta surged 108% immediately after the semifinal matchups were confirmed. Since the start of the tournament, total international bookings from Argentina are also 46% higher than last year. Beyond the semifinal, tickets from Argentina to Miami, host of the third-place match, increased nearly 17%, but bookings from Argentina to New Jersey, where the final will be held, are down 15%.
Bhanu Chopra, founder of RateGain Travel Technologies, which developed the Market Pulse Index tracking the World Cup, stated that fans book tickets as soon as their team reaches the semifinals.
"They react very quickly and book tickets almost immediately", he said.

The general trend shows a similar pattern. When comparing booking data with the match schedule, the surge in demand almost perfectly aligns with each round: as the number of teams decreased, affordable flight tickets to semifinal host cities quickly sold out.
According to data from The Street, US airline ticket prices have risen approximately 25% compared to the previous year, marking the highest annual increase since the Federal Reserve (Fed) began tracking the index in 1989. When a sporting event like the World Cup occurs, the pressure intensifies. American Express Global Business Travel reports that flight prices to World Cup host cities are currently about 42% higher than last year.
Airlines are implementing demand-based pricing mechanisms. As the tournament progresses to only two cities, the system automatically adjusts ticket prices based on search and booking volume, forcing last-minute buyers to pay higher fares. Those who wait until their team is confirmed for the semifinals could spend hundreds of USD more per seat.
However, the increase is not uniform. According to travel data company Sojern, in the early stages of the World Cup, flight bookings to Houston and Dallas saw double-digit increases, while Seattle was lower than last year. This indicates that key matches in the later rounds truly drive demand.
More noteworthy is consumer behavior. Fans are willing to pay any price for airline tickets to follow their teams, simultaneously cutting other expenses, including hotels, to offset costs. According to CoStar, during the final week of the group stage, hotel occupancy in US host cities decreased by nearly 3% compared to last year.
The World Cup alone is not enough to determine quarterly business results for tourism enterprises. Deutsche Bank estimates that even if the tournament attracts FIFA's expected 1,2 million international visitors, the event would only boost US GDP by approximately 0,05%.
The World Cup 2026 has three matches remaining. Semifinal two between England and Argentina will take place in Atlanta on 15/7, the third-place match on 18/7 in Miami, and the final in New Jersey on 19/7.
