How to get a free first-class upgrade on your next flight

Choosing the last row or volunteering to give up your seat are two effective tips to get a free upgrade on your next flight.

Utah-based flight attendant and TikToker Cierra Mistt shared two tips on her social media page to increase your chances of a free first-class upgrade.

The first tip is to choose a seat in the last row. According to Mistt, on flights with many empty seats, the cabin crew sometimes has to move passengers from the back to the front to balance the aircraft's weight. In these situations, those sitting in the last row are more likely to be offered empty seats further forward, including in first class. This not only provides passengers with a more comfortable experience but also benefits the flight attendants during their breaks.

The reason is that after moving passengers from the last row, flight attendants can easily take a break in those seats after completing their duties. According to Mistt, passenger seats are more comfortable than the jumpseats designated for crew members, which are typically smaller and have upright backs.

The second tip applies to overbooked flights, an increasingly common situation. If the gate agent announces they're looking for volunteers to change flights, they usually offer a relatively low initial compensation, around 200-500 USD in vouchers, depending on the airline's policy. Mistt advises passengers to negotiate for a higher amount and request cash. At the same time, when rebooked on the next flight, request a first-class seat as compensation.

According to Cierra, more than 99% of cases using this method are successful. She also suggests passengers "be polite to the ticket agents and flight attendants" to improve their chances.
