Korean vlogger sparks debate after harassment by group of men

A video by South Korean vlogger Ahn Eun-ji, showing her being surrounded and touched by a group of Tanzanian men while traveling alone, is sparking debate in her home country.

Eun-ji, who runs the travel channel "Moreunji" with approximately 440,000 subscribers, filmed the video in March during her trip to Tanzania. It recently resurfaced, garnering over one million views.

The video shows Eun-ji surrounded by a group of men while riding a motorcycle alone in Tanzania. Some men intentionally kissed her cheek, pressed against her, and touched her arms and shoulders. Frightened, Eun-ji repeatedly recoiled, warning, "Don't touch me," but the crowd continued to approach. After a few minutes, her driver managed to drive away from the group.

"Going on a safari in Africa was a dream, and I came here just for that. Why is this place so harsh?" Eun-ji wrote in the video description, calling Tanzania "the worst travel destination."

The incident quickly sparked debate within the South Korean online community, drawing two opposing viewpoints. One side expressed concern for Eun-ji's safety: "Creating content is important, but your life is more important. I want to keep watching your videos, so please go to safe places," one person commented.

Meanwhile, other comments criticized her for intentionally putting herself in a dangerous situation to attract viewers. "For viewers like us, the content is truly sensational, but I am very worried about you," another commenter stated.

The debate also drew greater attention from the South Korean public to the issue of solo travel safety abroad, particularly in Tanzania. While sexual assault cases in the country show a downward trend, the proportion of female victims remains high. According to Tanzanian government statistics released in June, sexual assault cases decreased from 12,749 in 2024 to 11,625 in 2025; of these, 10,057 (86%) were female.

Governments of many countries consistently warn female tourists visiting Tanzania. The UK Foreign Office has previously reported cases of foreign tourists experiencing sexual assault and rape there, including in coastal resorts. It advises against traveling alone at night and urges caution when accepting rides from strangers.
