Locals in Majorca are raising concerns about the widespread use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, among tourists. Drug gangs operating openly across the island are fueling the problem, particularly in popular party areas. While around 2 million British tourists visit Majorca annually for beach holidays, a growing number are requiring hospital treatment due to laughing gas abuse.
The sale of nitrous oxide balloons is rampant on the streets of Magaluf, especially in Punta Ballena and Playa de Palma. Jose Tirado, president of the Tourism Association, has called for urgent action, warning that "the situation is completely out of control." The effects of the gas have led some tourists to froth at the mouth and even collapse from seizures.

"It's unacceptable that we, as business owners who pay our taxes, have to witness mafia groups stealing our customers," Tirado said, adding that summer revenue is down 20% compared to last year. He criticized authorities for failing to protect local businesses like bars and restaurants in these areas.
According to Tirado, local businesses are tired of constantly calling the police, who often fail to respond. He suggests that police would need trucks to confiscate the sheer volume of illicit goods being sold.
Police have intensified investigations and conducted 20 operations between June and July. They issued 50 citations, seized various items, and fined 23 illegal suppliers between 490 and 810 USD. Recent raids have also confiscated 200 counterfeit products in an effort to protect both locals and tourists.
However, Tirado noted that banning the sale of nitrous oxide in bars has simply pushed the trade onto the streets. He claims the gangs operate "with complete impunity."

A similar problem is occurring in San Antonio, Ibiza. Katie Mae, a 21-year-old bartender at Shenanigans pub, described nitrous oxide as the worst drug. She has witnessed young men having seizures in the street while their intoxicated friends failed to help.
"I also saw a girl inhale the gas directly from the canister, freezing one side of her face and tearing her skin. She’ll definitely have a permanent scar," she said.
