Many hotels around the world avoid the number 13, considering it unlucky. Room 420 is also frequently skipped due to its connection to cannabis culture.

4/20 (April 20th) is known as International Weed Day. Cannabis-related celebrations are often held on this day in California and Colorado, two US states where recreational cannabis use is legal. Beyond the US, gatherings also occur, such as the one in London's Hyde Park, drawing thousands of people.
The number 420, in any form, holds a certain appeal for cannabis users. For hotel management, room 420 could encourage irresponsible cannabis-related behavior among guests. Therefore, hotels proactively avoid this issue.
Some hotels omit room 420 altogether, while others label it 419+1 to avoid the cannabis association and deter potential users. The omission also prevents theft of the room number sign as a souvenir. One Colorado hotel even resorted to engraving the number 420 on the door after repeated thefts.

The 420 association extends beyond hotels. Street signs bearing the number are frequently stolen, leading transportation authorities in states like Colorado, Idaho, and Minnesota to replace 420 signs with alternatives like 419.99 or 42x.
