On the morning of 8/5, Nguyen Van Long, Chairman of Hai Thinh Commune People's Committee, stated that authorities had investigated a coconut vendor to verify a video accusing her of collecting leftover coconut water to resell to tourists.
The investigation revealed that the vendor collected the coconut water to take home for cooking, a common local practice for stewing meat. After comparing the video content with the actual events, authorities confirmed the vendor had no intention of reselling the leftover water to other customers.
The incident originated on 6/5 when the woman sold two coconuts and one packet of chips for 90,000 VND to a group of customers, sparking a price dispute. Later that day, as she packed up her belongings and poured leftover coconut water into an empty shell to take home, the customers filmed her. They then shared the video on social media, raising concerns about food hygiene and safety.
"I shudder to think. What if my child, with a sensitive stomach, got sick?" the person who recorded the video shared.
Although the 90,000 VND price was considered higher than the average, there was insufficient basis for administrative penalties regarding price gouging.
However, to set an example and regulate business practices, Hai Thinh Commune People's Committee decided to suspend the woman's sales activities at Thinh Long beach for this year. The tourism area management board was also instructed to enhance supervision to ensure a civilized tourism environment.
Thinh Long beach, stretching over 7 km, is a famous tourist destination in Ninh Binh province, attracting visitors with its pristine beauty and sea sports activities.
