Tourist dies saving child at Tien Nu waterfall in Lang Son

A male tourist from Hanoi was swept away and died after diving into swift currents to save his son, who had slipped into the stream while visiting the Tien Nu waterfall tourist area on the afternoon of 1/9.

According to information from the People's Committee of Thien Thuat commune, Lang Son, on the afternoon of 1/9, a 42-year-old tourist from Hanoi visited the Tien Nu waterfall area with his family. Around 15h that day, his son accidentally slipped and fell into the stream, getting swept away by the water.

Seeing his child in danger, the father immediately plunged into the water and swam to rescue him. Local residents then helped the child to safety on shore, but the father was swept away by the swift currents and disappeared.

Hoang Anh Vu, Vice Chairman of Thien Thuat commune People's Committee, stated that upon receiving the report, local authorities and functional forces mobilized personnel to search through the night along the stream.

Around 7h on 2/9, rescue forces discovered the tourist's body in a section of the stream in Ban Chuc hamlet, Thien Thuat commune, approximately 100 m from the accident site. The victim's body was returned to his family for funeral arrangements.

Tien Nu waterfall (also known as Dang Mo waterfall) is a designated ecological tourist destination that charges an entrance fee. The waterfall is located about 90 km from central Lang Son and over 160 km from Hanoi, boasting pristine natural scenery, ancient forests, and water cascading over limestone cliffs.

At the time of the incident, there was no rain, but heavy rainfall in the late 8 had caused the stream's currents to become very swift. The tourist area's management board had placed danger warning signs around the waterfall area.

Following the incident, the Management Board of Tien Nu Ecological Tourist Area announced a temporary suspension of all operations from 15h on 1/9 to ensure safety and address the situation. The unit stated it would proactively contact and assist tourists with existing bookings, offering service changes or refunds, and would update the reopening schedule on its official information channels.
