US ends visa interview waiver program from September 2

From September 2, Vietnamese travelers seeking US visa renewals will need in-person interviews.

The US State Department announced on July 25 that the interview waiver program (Dropbox) for most non-immigrant visa renewals will end on September 2. This affects visas for work, study, and other categories previously eligible for the waiver. Children under 14 and adults over 79 will also be required to attend in-person interviews at the US embassy or consulate.

Some exceptions to this policy include diplomatic and official visas. Applicants renewing B1/B2 (tourist and business) visas that are still valid or have expired within the past 12 months, and who were at least 18 years old when the previous visa was issued, may also be exempt.

Those renewing tourist or business visas must also meet additional criteria for the interview waiver: they must apply in their country of citizenship or legal residence; they must have no prior visa refusals; and they must have no factors that could lead to a visa denial.

This policy change aims to enhance security screening and individual case review, returning to pre-pandemic vetting procedures. US officials retain the right to request an in-person interview in any case, even if the applicant meets the waiver criteria.

According to Pham Anh Vu, Deputy General Director of Vietravel, the new policy won't increase tour prices to the US, but it may lessen the destination's appeal. Previously, travelers with expired US visas could simply renew by mail with a high success rate (over 90%). After September 2, applicants will require more thorough preparation. The success rate for in-person interviews is "harder to predict," as it depends on the applicant's responses, demeanor, and the consular officer's assessment.

US tourist visas typically last for 12 months, allowing multiple entries during their validity. The length of each stay is determined by customs officials, usually with a maximum of 6 months. Travelers can renew their visas within 12 months of expiry if they meet the requirements.

"If your visa is about to expire, apply for renewal before September 2," advised Pham Anh Vu, Deputy General Director of Vietravel.
