'Flamingo missile' triggers Russia's first large-scale alert

Russia issued air raid warnings across 13 regions for the first time since the start of the conflict, seemingly due to strikes involving Ukraine's Flamingo missiles.

Russian media reported that missile alerts were activated simultaneously in at least 13 provinces across the country on the afternoon of 27/2, marking the first time such an extensive warning has been issued since the conflict with Ukraine began. For at least eight of these regions, it was their first-ever such alert.

This action led to the suspension of public transport in some areas, such as the city of Almetyevsk. Students in Kazan, Izhevsk, and staff at Kurumoch airport in Samara were also ordered to evacuate.

Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations later lifted missile alerts in nine areas within the Volga federal district.

According to Russian media, two Ukrainian Flamingo cruise missiles were reportedly shot down in the Chuvashia Republic. Local authorities initially announced that the area had been targeted by two missiles, with one shot down and the other flying elsewhere. However, officials later retracted this statement, saying there was no confirmation of the information.

AMK Mapping, an X account specializing in open-source intelligence on the conflict, assessed that at least four Flamingo missiles were launched from Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk province. Two of these projectiles, aimed at Russia's Perm province, were shot down. Two other missiles headed towards the city of Yekaterinburg, traveling over 2,000 km, with their final outcome unknown.

Neither Russia's Ministry of Defense nor Ukrainian officials have commented on this information.

The Flamingo cruise missile, produced by Ukraine's Fire Point company, is advertised with a 1,150 kg warhead and a 3,000 km range, surpassing all Western weapons supplied to Kyiv.

Ukraine has recently stated multiple times that it has used this type of munition to strike targets within Russian territory. On 21/2, the General Staff of the Ukrainian army announced that it had launched Flamingo missiles at the Votkinsk plant in Russia's Udmurtia Republic, causing a fire. This facility specializes in producing various ballistic missiles for Moscow.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that all launched missiles reached their targets, despite some being intercepted, adding that this was a "true success for Ukrainian industry". Video and satellite images released by Ukrainian media showed the strike caused a large explosion, creating a hole in the roof of a production workshop at the Votkinsk plant.
