Vietnamese ambassador to China Pham Thanh Binh stated on 10/4 that this visit is the most important bilateral diplomatic activity between the two Parties and two countries in 2026. It marks the first foreign trip for General Secretary and President To Lam since Vietnam consolidated its State leadership positions at the first session of the 16th National Assembly, and it is also the first visit by a General Secretary and President to China since the 14th National Congress.
During the visit, General Secretary and President To Lam will hold talks with Chinese General Secretary and President Xi Jinping and meet with other senior Chinese leaders.
General Secretary and President To Lam is scheduled to deliver a policy speech at Tsinghua University, meet with relatives of friends from both countries, and attend or launch several programs for people-to-people exchanges, cultural and artistic cooperation, and tourism.
Vietnamese leaders are expected to conduct surveys and study pilot models of new urban areas, railway infrastructure and industry systems, and research and application facilities for artificial intelligence and innovation in Beijing, Hebei, and Guangxi.
China was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam on 18/1/1950. The two countries established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2008. In 2023, they issued a joint statement to elevate their Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, promoting the building of a community of shared future with strategic significance.
In 2025, China was Vietnam's largest trading partner, while Vietnam was China's largest trading partner within ASEAN and its fourth largest trading partner globally based on country criteria.
