Indian sniper posts selfie video, reveals position

An Indian police officer was suspended after posting a video that exposed a security position during the BRICS summit in New Delhi.

NDTV identified the suspended officer on 16/9 as Deepak Bangar, a member of the Delhi Police's International Affairs Unit. Bangar was part of the security detail for a 5-star hotel in central New Delhi, where international delegations stayed during the BRICS summit. He was assigned sniper duty on the rooftop.

In a video posted on his personal Instagram account, Bangar, dressed in black, held a sniper rifle and posed as if taking aim. The camera then panned to a view of the city at night.

Another video showed Bangar wearing a BRICS summit employee identification card, with a pistol visible in his pocket.

These images quickly gained attention on social media, prompting the Delhi Police to launch an investigation. Bangar's Instagram account was subsequently locked.

A senior representative of the Indian police stated, "Given the severity of this disciplinary violation, the individual has been removed from BRICS security duty and immediately suspended. An internal investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the video recording. Further disciplinary steps will be taken according to regulations."

The incident raised concerns about law enforcement personnel using social media during sensitive missions, as images or videos could inadvertently reveal security positions and plans.

The 18th BRICS summit took place over two days, 12-13/9, in New Delhi, during India's fourth presidency. A total of 32 delegations attended the event.
