On 30/1, a resident of Milton, Massachusetts, decided to clear ice and snow from his roof and gutters during a blizzard sweeping the northeastern United States.
He used a blowtorch, climbed a ladder onto the roof, and began melting the ice. Within minutes, he realized his error as the roof started to burn. The flames quickly spread to the gutter area. The homeowner slid down the ladder and called 911.
When firefighters arrived shortly after, fire engulfed the entire attic. Neighbors told local media that "the entire roof was consumed" in 5 minutes.

Milton Fire Department Deputy Chief John Earner stated the initial response team at the scene thought it was a small fire, but quickly realized the entire attic was ablaze.
He and his colleagues battled the fire in freezing conditions, with ice and snow making the rescue difficult. Firefighters from neighboring towns assisted, and it took many hours to control the blaze.
Local officials reported no injuries. The homeowner and his wife safely left the scene, and the fire did not spread to adjacent homes.
The Milton Fire Department warned residents against carelessness when dealing with roof ice and snow, especially in harsh weather. Earner advised people to hire professionals to handle ice on roofs and gutters, avoiding climbing onto roofs themselves or using dangerous methods.
