The New York City Police Department (NYPD) announced on 13/10 that officers responded to West 141st Street in Manhattan's Hamilton Heights neighborhood. The response followed reports of three men prying open a manhole cover and descending into the sewer system. This latest event occurred in the early morning of 11/10.
The 11/10 incident sparked public concern, coming just two days after a similar occurrence. On that earlier occasion, a group of 4 men and one woman were seen emerging from a manhole in Manhattan's Upper East Side. According to police sources, that group left the scene in a black SUV, leaving behind shovels and other tools.

In the latest incident, an NYPD representative stated that at least one man from the group climbed out of the manhole, got into a silver vehicle, and drove away before officers arrived. Police stated the incident is under investigation, and they are unsure if it is connected to other sewer entries.
David Ford, a Hamilton Heights resident, noted that incidents of "mole people" entering the sewers usually occur in Midtown Manhattan, rarely happening in Hamilton Heights.

New York police increased security measures in late September. This followed the apprehension of two people emerging from a manhole near the hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was staying during the United Nations General Assembly session. Local authorities and federal agents subsequently searched the area, finding nothing suspicious.
Police believe these "mole people" enter New York's sewer system to scavenge for scrap metal, or for coins and jewelry washed into the drains after heavy rains.
