White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the request, stating, "We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign," during a press briefing on 13/10.
This announcement followed President Donald Trump's statement a day earlier that he was considering removing Kimberly Guilfoyle from her post. "We are not satisfied," Trump replied when questioned about Guilfoyle. Guilfoyle, 57, was appointed US ambassador to Greece in November 2025. She previously dated Donald Trump Jr., separating in 2024. Guilfoyle has faced increasing scrutiny following a series of Wall Street Journal articles detailing her financial transactions and relationships with wealthy businessmen.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Guilfoyle asked Eric Deters, an influential Trump donor, to pay a personal credit card debt of 100,000 USD before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025. "Please, I need you to take care of this today," Guilfoyle wrote in a message to Deters, including payment instructions for the credit card company. Deters declined, stating it would jeopardize his marriage.
Guilfoyle's lawyers questioned the authenticity of the message and denied any wrongdoing by their client. They asserted the requested funds were unpaid compensation for past services, including public appearances and speeches, which occurred before her nomination as ambassador.

Guilfoyle also reportedly boasted about trips and vacations at luxury hotels paid for by Greek businessmen. She traveled to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on a private jet with Alexandros Exarchou, CEO of the Greek construction company Aktor Group. Additionally, Guilfoyle took a Christmas vacation at the luxury ski resort Gstaad in Switzerland with Greek shipping magnate Nikolas Tsakos, who also covered her entire stay at a luxury hotel in Paris.
Guilfoyle's lawyers refuted allegations of misconduct related to her private jet travel. They stated that before each such flight, Guilfoyle "consulted, received approval, and strictly adhered to State Department travel guidelines and regulations." The US State Department Inspector General is investigating whether Guilfoyle received inappropriate gifts.
After separating from Donald Jr., Guilfoyle maintained close ties with the Trump family. Before her ambassadorship, she worked as a prosecutor and a Fox News host. When appointing Guilfoyle as ambassador, Trump expressed confidence in her suitability to advance bilateral relations with Greece and promote US interests in areas from defense cooperation to trade and economics.
