This visit underscores the deepening ties between Vietnam and China, nations that established diplomatic relations on 18/1/1950, with China being the first country to do so globally. Economically, Vietnam has been China's largest trade partner in ASEAN for 10 consecutive years and its fourth largest globally for two consecutive years (2024, 2025). Conversely, China has remained Vietnam's largest trade partner for over 20 consecutive years.
Bilateral trade figures highlight this robust relationship. In 2025, Vietnam-China trade turnover reached USD 256.4 billion. This trend continued into the first seven months of 2026, with China being Vietnam's top trade partner, recording a trade turnover of USD 184.2 billion.
High-level exchanges have further solidified the bilateral bond. In April, General Secretary and President To Lam conducted a state visit to China, following a state visit to Vietnam by General Secretary and Chinese President Xi Jinping one year prior. These visits culminated in a joint statement aimed at deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and fostering a Vietnam-China community with a shared future, signifying a higher strategic level in the new era.
Reflecting the overall growth in bilateral relations, cooperation between the National Assembly of Vietnam and China's National People's Congress has also strengthened. Both legislative bodies are actively implementing a cooperation agreement signed in 2024 and are enhancing experience sharing among their specialized committees, parliamentary friendship groups, and local parliaments.
