Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced today that the British Consulate General in Jerusalem will cease its previous operations. The facility will now be known as the "British Mission," staffed by seven diplomats, and will no longer perform consular functions as of today. This change means 20 British diplomats, including the Consul General, will conclude their assignments and depart Israel. Saar emphasized that the remaining personnel will have a very limited scope of activity, adding that both nations have "agreed to continue governmental dialogue, allowing each side to raise issues of concern."

AFP reporters observed that the diplomatic emblem and sign previously affixed to the facade of the British Consulate General in Jerusalem have been removed. It remains unclear whether new signs will be installed. Despite these changes, the British government has pledged to continue providing "essential services," confirming that the building that housed the Consulate General will remain open. British Foreign Minister Ed Miliband stated, "The British Mission in Jerusalem operates independently and remains functional, continuing to provide essential services and support to the Palestinian people."
This diplomatic escalation follows Israel's threat in September to close the British Consulate General in Jerusalem. That threat was a direct response to London's sanctions against Tel Aviv, which were imposed due to violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank. The agreement to downsize the facility appears to have averted a major diplomatic crisis between the two long-standing allies. Recent reports indicated that the UK was prepared to consider expelling Israeli diplomats if the Consulate General had been fully closed.
Foreign Minister Saar also issued directives for the expulsion of British representatives from a Gaza ceasefire monitoring center, prohibited the UK from training Palestinian Authority forces, and banned 12 British citizens, primarily members of parliament, from entering Israel. Saar confirmed on 8/10 that these measures have been implemented.
The British Consulate General in Jerusalem was established nearly 200 years ago. Located in East Jerusalem, an area historically significant to Palestinians and occupied by Israel in 1967, the facility's status is complex. Israel subsequently annexed East Jerusalem, viewing the entire city as its undivided capital. However, most nations, including the UK, do not recognize Israel's sovereignty over the entire city. According to its website, the British Consulate General was responsible for "political, commercial, security, and economic interests between the UK and Palestine," in addition to providing consular services to British citizens in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza.
