Vietnam and Panama established diplomatic relations on 28/8/1975. Panama was one of the first Latin American countries to recognize the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Last year, the two countries jointly organized activities celebrating 50 years of diplomatic ties.
Relations between Vietnam and Panama have continued to strengthen and develop, promoting high-level visits when conditions permit. The two nations maintain a Joint Committee mechanism on economic, trade, and investment cooperation, fostering bilateral trade and investment exchanges through promotional activities and business delegation visits. Cooperation in maritime transport, agriculture, education, and people-to-people exchanges has also been enhanced.
Panama consistently ranks among Vietnam's top 10 trading partners in Latin America. According to data from the General Department of Customs, bilateral trade turnover in 2025 reached USD 478,1 million, a 19,2% increase compared to 2024. Exports to Panama amounted to USD 462,6 million, up 18,42%, while imports reached USD 15,5 million, a 48,14% rise.
For over 50 years, both sides have regularly coordinated and supported each other at the United Nations and other international forums, while promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Panama serves as an important gateway for Vietnamese goods to access Central American and Caribbean markets.
