Patriot fires barrage of interceptor missiles against Iranian rockets

A newly released video shows a Patriot system in the UAE firing multiple interceptor missiles to counter an Iranian attack, though some targets still got through.

Clash Report, an X account specializing in open-source intelligence on conflicts, published a video on 11/3. Recorded by a Chinese sailor, the footage shows a Patriot air defense system firing at least six missiles to protect the Fujairah oil depot in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

However, at least two Iranian ballistic missiles bypassed the UAE's air defense network and struck, causing significant explosions. The exact time the video was recorded and whether any of the six missiles successfully intercepted their targets remains unclear. Each Patriot battery typically launches two missiles to intercept one ballistic missile.

The UAE has not released information regarding the attack on the Fujairah oil depot. Local officials stated on 3/3 that a fire erupted at Fujairah port after debris from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) shot down by UAE air defenses fell onto the facility.

Commercial satellite images released on 6/3 showed at least two oil storage tanks at Fujairah burning, producing plumes of black smoke. Another tank appeared to have been completely consumed by the fire.

The Middle East has been embroiled in conflict since the US and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran on 28/2. Iran retaliated by firing missiles and UAVs at Israel and US bases in Arab countries in the region.

Iran has also targeted critical infrastructure in Gulf countries, including oil and gas facilities, as well as vessels attempting to traverse the Strait of Hormuz or anchored in the area. The clashes have resulted in approximately 2,000 deaths, primarily in Iran, and affected numerous regional nations.

Iran's continuous attacks are placing significant pressure on the air defense networks of the US and its allies in the Middle East. Observers note that Patriot systems in the region face the risk of depleting their interceptor missile stockpiles, with limited replenishment capabilities.

Iran's retaliatory strikes have also destroyed numerous radar systems, valued at hundreds of millions to over one billion USD, deployed by the US and its allies in the region.
