"It's time for The Boring Company to start building the Putin - Trump tunnel, connecting Russia with the US, Eurasia with America", Kirill Dmitriev, senior advisor and special envoy to President Vladimir Putin, wrote on social media platform X on 11/10, referring to Elon Musk's tunnel construction company.
Dmitriev first proposed the Bering strait tunnel project in 10/2025. He described it as a symbolic project for unity, capable of boosting resource exploration, creating jobs, and supporting the economies of both nations.

The proposed tunnel would stretch for about 113 km, situated beneath the narrowest part of the Bering strait, which separates Russia's Chukotka region from the US state of Alaska.
The Bering tunnel idea emerged approximately two months after a summit meeting between President Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska. During this summit, the two leaders discussed efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. The event also marked the first direct high-level contact between Moscow and Washington since the conflict escalated.
Dmitriev estimated that using conventional construction technology, the project could cost over 65 billion USD. However, he suggested that The Boring Company's technology could reduce costs by 90%, bringing the total to under 8 billion USD, while also shortening the construction time to about 8 years.
Dmitriev, who also heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), confirmed the agency's readiness to participate in the project. He cited their experience in co-financing the construction of a railway bridge connecting Russia and China. Earlier this year, Dmitriev announced that RDIF had signed an agreement to continue the tunnel's design, with further implementation steps expected before year-end.

The concept of building a tunnel under the Bering strait echoes a Cold War proposal for a "Khrushchev - Kennedy" bridge, intended to connect the Soviet Union and the US.
Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna this week released declassified Soviet secret files related to the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy. The 350-page document also mentioned the bridge proposal.
