On the morning of 9/2, Highway 613 in Italy's southern Puglia region experienced chaos when a gang of 6-10 members, disguised as police, attempted to hijack an armored cash transport vehicle from the Battistolli company.
Resident videos show the suspects blocking traffic lanes with a pickup truck and a small truck. Gunmen, clad in white overalls and black balaclavas, armed with automatic rifles, moved through traffic to close in on the armored vehicle. Witnesses reported the gang also set fire to other vehicles, creating a "fire barrier" to deter access.
Upon reaching their target, a gang member placed an explosive device on the armored vehicle, retreated, and detonated it. A powerful explosion ensued, scattering debris across the road and engulfing the area in thick black smoke.
Police arriving at the scene faced gunfire from the gang, forcing them to take cover behind vehicles. One patrol car sustained three bullet impacts, and another vehicle was severely struck.
Local officials confirmed no casualties among police, cash transport personnel, or civilians. Despite the powerful blast, the vehicle's protective mechanisms activated, thwarting the gang's attempt to access the cash.
After leaving the scene, the suspects stole civilian vehicles to evade roadblocks and spike strips, facilitating their escape. Police later intercepted a speeding car nearby, arresting two suspects. A third suspect was apprehended after abandoning a vehicle and fleeing into a rural area.
Police confirmed the robbery was unsuccessful, with no money stolen. A large-scale manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects, utilizing helicopter surveillance, increased patrols, and checkpoints throughout the region.
Nicola Magno, secretary general of the Puglia region's association of former police officers, stated the incident exemplifies serious violent crime in the area. Italian media suggest the suspects originate from the Foggia area, a city of approximately 150,000 residents, recognized as a "stronghold" for gangs specializing in vehicle robberies.
