Thailand accuses Cambodia of mortar attack, violating ceasefire agreement

Bangkok accuses Phnom Penh of violating a ceasefire agreement by firing mortars at a high point in Chong Bok, injuring a Thai soldier.

Cambodian forces violated a ceasefire by firing mortar rounds at high point 469 in the Chong Bok area, injuring a Thai soldier with shrapnel. The soldier was evacuated for medical treatment", Thailand's 2nd Army Corps announced today.

Lieutenant General Weerayuth Raksilp, commander of Thailand's 2nd Military Region, later stated the mortar attack occurred at 7:25 h. Thailand's 2nd Military Region is investigating the incident's cause, instructing all subordinate units to heighten vigilance during operations to ensure maximum safety for soldiers and residents.

Cambodian officials have not yet commented on the information.

On 5/1, Cambodia accused Thai soldiers of "continuing attacks, destroying homes and residents' property, and damaging civilian infrastructure and cultural sites despite a ceasefire".

Phnom Penh urged United Nations agencies to examine the impact of Thai military activities and seek an end to them, also demanding that Bangkok "withdraw troops from Cambodian territory and compensate those who suffered damages".

Clashes erupted in early December 2025, killing at least 23 people in Thailand and 32 in Cambodia, and displacing over 900,000 residents in both countries.

Representatives from the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Border Committee (GBC) signed a joint statement on 27/12/2025, reaffirming their commitment to fully implement the ceasefire. Both sides agreed to work towards peace, stability, and security for residents living along the border area, refraining from unprovoked firing, advancing troops, or deploying forces close to the other side's positions.

A day later, Thailand reported that 250 Cambodian unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) had flown into its airspace. Cambodian officials later announced that the two countries had discussed the incident, agreeing to investigate and resolve it immediately.

Last week, Thailand released 18 Cambodian soldiers arrested in Preah Vihear province during clashes in July 2025. The prisoner handover ceremony was conducted in the presence of ASEAN observers and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
