Interim President Delcy Rodriguez of Venezuela, on 6/1, appointed General Gustavo Enrique Gonzalez Lopez, 66 years old, as commander of the Presidential Guard and Director of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM), replacing General Javier Marcano Tabata.
The Presidential Guard is the unit responsible for ensuring the safety of Venezuelan leaders. In the appointment decree, Rodriguez expressed confidence in General Lopez's experience and loyalty, stating that his career and dedication were the reasons for his selection for this position.

General Tabata, Lopez's predecessor, was previously dismissed as the Venezuelan government undertook a large-scale reorganization within the national military and intelligence leadership.
According to an announcement from the Venezuelan government, this personnel change reflects efforts to maintain institutional continuity and enhance national security under the leadership of Interim President Rodriguez.
General Lopez has held numerous high-level positions, including head of Venezuela's intelligence agency and various roles in internal affairs and justice.
Rodriguez was sworn in as interim president of Venezuela on 5/1, just 48 hours after a United States raid on Venezuela in the early hours of 3/1. The raid led to the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were subsequently taken to the United States to face a series of drug and weapons charges.
The interim president of Venezuela expressed a desire to cooperate with the United States for mutual development. However, President Donald Trump has not yet agreed on this matter, stating he would speak with Rodriguez at an appropriate time.
