In the State of the Union address on the evening of 24/2, US President Donald Trump clearly showcased qualities from his time as a reality television star, creating a series of highlights for the nearly two-hour event and keeping the audience engaged.
Interspersed with dry domestic and foreign policy information, Trump consistently created surprises by introducing special guests or announcing unheralded awards. This reflected his skill in grasping elements that make for a compelling show.
Amidst policy statements and critiques on taxes, immigration policy, or prices, Trump honored American heroes, creating rare moments of bipartisan support from both parties' legislators.
100-year-old veteran Royce Williams, a US Navy fighter pilot, was called by name by Trump and received the Medal of Honor from First Lady Melania Trump, prompting a standing ovation from the entire chamber.

Sergeant Eric Slover, who participated in the raid to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in Caracas, also received the Medal of Honor. Trump also presided over an emotional family reunion for political prisoner Enrique Marquez.
"Alejandra, I am thrilled to inform you that your uncle has not only been released, but he is here tonight. We brought him here to celebrate his freedom with you. Enrique, please come down", Trump said in an overjoyed tone.

The US President also presented the Medal of Merit to Petty Officer Scott Ruskan of the US Coast Guard for his achievement in rescuing over 160 people at Camp Mystic summer camp in Texas during deadly floods last summer. Ruskan received applause from most legislators in the chamber.
President Trump also unexpectedly introduced the men's hockey team athletes who had just won gold at the Olympic Winter Games 2026. They appeared, raising their medals to resounding applause.
Trump announced he would award the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor, to goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, emphasizing that the athlete was "truly deserving."

President Trump's State of the Union address lasted 108 minutes, the longest since State of the Union addresses began being televised in the US in 1964 and surpassing the 1 hour, 28 minutes, 49 seconds record set by former President Bill Clinton in 2000.
The US President opened the speech declaring America's return, stronger, better, wealthier, and more powerful than ever. He focused on praising economic achievements, border security, defending tax policies, and attacking Democrats, with little mention of foreign policy issues.
