Three-year-old boy thrown into crocodile enclosure in UK

A 30-year-old man is suspected of throwing a boy into a crocodile enclosure, leading to the child's hospitalization in critical condition.

Cambridgeshire Police received a report at 13:24 on 18/6 concerning an incident at Old Hurst Zoo, near Huntingdon, southern England. Andy Johnson, the zoo's operator, stated his wife, Tracey, bravely entered the crocodile enclosure to rescue the boy. The child was hospitalized with serious injuries.

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. UK police indicated that the man and the boy did not know each other.

On 19/6, UK police released the man on bail until 18/9, pending further investigation. Authorities determined he was not in a suitable state to be interviewed.

LBC reported that the man "has cognitive difficulties" and was on an outing with a caregiver when the incident occurred.

"We are speaking with everyone present at the zoo during this regrettable incident to better understand what happened," stated Inspector Verity McCann.

Old Hurst operates as a family-run farm business, encompassing a butcher shop, farm store, tearoom, steak restaurant, and a zoo. The zoo's website advertises "over 100 fascinating animals," such as crocodiles, African lions, and a Bengal tiger. The crocodile enclosure is within a converted cattle barn, featuring an elevated, metal-railed walkway that offers views of a large pool set amidst tropical plants.

Mike Annicelli, 52, a resident living near the zoo, stated the crocodiles were about 4,5 meters below the elevated floor. A 1,2-meter-high fence runs along the walkway.

The Johnson family announced that the Tropical House, which houses the crocodiles, would remain closed until further notice as a mark of respect for the affected family.

"Our deepest thoughts and sympathy are with the boy and his family," the zoo stated.

Charlotte Lowe, a representative for the Old Hurst area on both Huntingdonshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, expressed her "shock" upon hearing of the incident.

"For something like this to happen here is truly unbelievable," she commented, adding, "You never expect this in a rural village."

She also noted that the enclosure had established safety measures, including Perspex glass and secure walkways. The zoo is a popular attraction, drawing visitors nationwide.
