UK set to share storm shadow missile expertise with Ukraine

UK prime minister visits kyiv, expected to announce an agreement granting Ukraine access to classified data to develop its own domestic version of the storm shadow missile.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Kyiv today by train, marking his first foreign visit as leader. During his trip, he is expected to announce an agreement allowing defense group MBDA to declassify data on UK-made components of the Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG cruise missile, a move designed to help Ukraine develop its own domestic version. Burnham will also chair a meeting of the "Goodwill Alliance," comprising over 35 nations supporting Ukraine, and meet President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the UK Prime Minister's Office, Burnham will convey Britain's full support for Ukraine's independence, stating that threats from Moscow only strengthen London's resolve. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and other Ukrainian officials welcomed Burnham at the train station, The Guardian reported.

Complementing the UK's commitment, the European Union today announced its approval of 6.1 billion euros (7.1 billion USD) in military aid for Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated the funds would be used to provide urgently needed air defense and defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar. She emphasized Europe's solidarity, saying, "Europe stands with you today, tomorrow, and as long as necessary."

The Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG cruise missile, jointly developed by the UK and France, boasts a top speed of 1,000 km/h and a range of 250-560 km, depending on the variant. Engineered with a reduced radar cross-section and low-altitude flight capability, it evades air defense radar. The missile employs an inertial guidance system, satellite navigation, and terrain matching for precise target engagement. Its BROACH warhead features a primary shaped charge designed to penetrate reinforced concrete and soil, allowing a larger explosive warhead to follow and inflict maximum damage.

The UK and France first supplied Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG missiles to Ukraine in May 2023. Ukrainian forces have since claimed to use these weapons to strike targets in Russia and Russian-controlled territories. Russia, in turn, has recovered several nearly intact Storm Shadow missiles, facilitating the development of countermeasures. The Russian military has reported intercepting multiple Storm Shadow attacks, while Ukrainian forces have reportedly reduced their usage due to dwindling stockpiles.

The UK has been one of Ukraine's strongest supporters since the conflict began in 2022. Britain has pledged approximately 25 billion pounds (33 billion USD) in aid, including 16 billion pounds (21.8 billion USD) in military assistance.
