The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts on 19/3 approved the final design for a 24-karat gold coin featuring President Donald Trump. This coin will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding, observed on 4/7.
The Commission members, all supporters of Mr. Trump appointed by him earlier this year, unanimously agreed on the design. One side of the new coin will feature Mr. Trump in the Oval Office, accompanied by the numbers 1776 and 2026. The reverse side will bear the American eagle symbol.

Federal law typically prohibits incumbent presidents from appearing on U.S. currency. However, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent applied a specific regulation to bypass this federal law.
Megan Sullivan, Acting Chief of the Office of Design Management at the U.S. Mint, explained that a provision in the U.S. Code allows the Secretary of the Treasury to decide on the minting and issuance of 12 types of coins, including some gold ones. Sullivan stated, “As I understand it, the Secretary of the Treasury presented this design, as well as others, to the President, and this is the design he chose.”

Brandon Beach, Director of the National Treasury, voiced enthusiasm for the initiative. “As we approach the nation's 250th anniversary, we are thrilled to prepare coins that embody the enduring spirit of our country and democracy. No image is more iconic than that of incumbent President Donald Trump,” Beach stated.
This approval allows the U.S. Mint to begin producing the new coin. Its size and denomination are still under discussion.
President Trump has a history of renaming public institutions and assets after himself, including the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Kennedy Center, and a class of new warships.
