US warns citizens of travel risks in Cambodia

The US State Department has raised its travel advisory for certain regions of Cambodia due to security concerns, urging citizens not to resist if confronted by robbers.

The US State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory, "exercise increased caution," for Cambodia this week, citing security concerns. The advisory specifically warns US citizens about the risk of crime in the capital, Phnom Penh.

Several provinces, including Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, Preah Vihear, and Kampong Thom, have also seen their advisory levels elevated. This is due to the persistent danger from unexploded ordnance in these areas. Furthermore, US citizens are strongly advised to avoid travel to regions along the Cambodia-Thailand border due to ongoing instability.

For those traveling to Cambodia, the State Department offers key safety recommendations. It advises against resisting with force if confronted by robbers. Additionally, travelers are encouraged to purchase comprehensive travel insurance and to confirm that their policy covers evacuation assistance, medical expenses, and trip cancellation.

The advisory also highlights Cambodia's stringent drug laws, which enforce a zero-tolerance policy for all drug offenses. "Possession of even a small amount of illegal drugs can lead to arrest, lengthy prison sentences, or even life imprisonment," the warning states. Travelers are also urged to be cautious when accepting drinks from others.

This recent advisory for Cambodia is part of a broader trend, as US officials consistently issue updated travel and security warnings for various destinations globally.

For example, in early September, the State Department upgraded its Level 2 warning for Italy due to terrorism concerns. It reminded travelers to be vigilant against street crimes like pickpocketing and bag snatching in tourist areas and on public transportation.
